It's nearly a split decision on these two for me.

KRK's seem to have a fuller, rounder sound...smooth. A little more bottom.

Yam's seem to have REALLY revealing mids and highs, and a very tight, articulated low end...but I've yet to hear them in an ideal environment.

Both are the same price, and Yamaha has a long, solid rep for monitors. KRK's also seem to have a solid pedigree and sound excellent, but I'm uncertain as to which might be more 'honest.'

I'm using a 10'x11' bedroom for a studio, and it's decently treated.

Thoughts or opinions?

Thanks, Dan

KRK's

KRK's are tight. The bass seems realistic and solid. The high's are silky. I A/B'd them with Maudios Bx series. . .compared to the KRK's, the Maudios bass sounded sloppy. . .I haven't had a bad mix yet. . .bad songs and promos-yes. . .but not a bad mix.

i've actually been turning these two over in my mind; however, i've been look at the hs80m, not the hs50m. i like that the yamaha's have much more EQ options on the back, so you can semi-tailor them to fit your space.

i've auditioned the hs80m and was quite impressed with them, but few people seem to be using them compared to the RP6s. once i've auditioned them, i'm probably going to go for the RP6s as if they simply don't work in my room i'll be able to sell'em without losing too much money...

I have the RP6s and have been happy with them. I haven't heard the HS50Ms but assume they would work fine as well. Will the dealer let you take them both home for a few days to demo? That's the best way to really check them in your setup. Most people selling monitors I've dealt with let you do that since you can't really tell what will work best until you've had a chance to try them in your room.

Sweet crackers the monitor posts have spilled into new sections of the BBS...

I have the KRK RP-5s, they work very well for getting a good mix to translate to other systems.

There may be fewere HS80M users because they're $350 ea, while the RP6 is $200 ea...

I liked the HS80M's as well. The HS80M also had more low end than the HS50M. The HS50M seemed OK but nothing to write home about...I wondered if the HS80M was "hyped" or not flat, although I believe I did not check the switch settings at the time. But then, I'm also looking for my first pair of monitor speakers.

Thank you for the great responses so far, guys; sounds like the scales really do go either way! Glad to hear so many positives for both brands.

For my little room, the HS80's would be too much speaker...5-6" woofers will be ideal for me, and I'm going to be sitting close.

Both my good friend and I each own a set of the HS50M's and we both are quite fond of them. Solid construction, many EQ options, and for the home-recording nut- hard to beat. As with any monitors, placement is crucial, but once you get used to thier sonic signature ( I listen to everything through them) you can adjust your mixes accordingly to achieve great results. 8" speakers may be indeed overkill in most small rooms. Good luck.
