Monitors worthless without room treatment?

Sweet. I'll buy some good monitors and see what I can do with them. Even in an untreated room , if the monitors aren't near as misleading as my computer speakers then I'll be in a lot better position than I am now. When I'm ready for some serious room treatment I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions but until then...THANKS

I feel your pain & have mixed plenty of "great" mixes in the basement studio, only to find them to be thin & tinny everywhere else. I believe room treatment can definitely help, but may not be an option, depending on the situation.
Helpful advice I've gotten is to listen to a great sounding CD (or high bitrate mp3) in your studio, through the mix monitors, prior to mixing. Use that as the reference in terms of clarity, beef, dynamics, etc (but try to save the mastering process for later!). I wanted my mixes to be clear but full & found my low end was too low & the highs were shrill, compared to my reference CD. Keep referring to that reference throughout the process & I think it wil help.

All monitors have a flat response in anechoic chambers nowadays. You choose your monitors because you like them. Not because they are better than the other ones.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that. There are huge differences - particularly in tweeters. The main reason I went for KRKs was that their tweeters aren't distorted and don't mush all the high frequencies into a sizzle - instead they actually reveal the different kinds of highs from brightness up through air.
