MONITORS or SPEAKERS

I was wondering if a good quality stereo system(with good speakers too) was to be connected to my PC, if it would give me the same results as true monitors. Pocketwise speaking 300$ or up is not within my budget for monitors, unless they are absolutely necessary.

Home stereo speakers will not give you the clarity or transparency that you need. If you are serious about your recordings then monitors are a must..

Depends what you mean by home stereo system. There is crap hifi equipment and there is quality, accurate hifi equipment. The quality stuff will be as good or better than pro audio amplifiers and monitors.

If you are talking about a new hifi setup for less than $300 then you can pretty much assume it wont be accurate.
