Typically, the people that talk badly about ns-10's either have not used them, or just do not know how to use them. Everyone knows they are nopt beuatiful, but those with experience also know that they are very capable.

horses for courses, my buddy uses them

I've worked in his studio with them & to be straight I'm not a fan

not to keen on JBL control 1s either

I am a tannoy freak & have been since I started

I have heard my mixes through NS10s & it sounds great, mind you that's the idea behind the NS10 is that if it sounds good on them it should sound good on most other systems as well

I use a pair of Fostex PM1's... In a different class to any 'Hifi' speaker I've bought, we tracked about a dozen guitar parts for a song recently (don't ask) but you could hear each one clearly and distinctly, the quality of the mixes blow me away everytime on these fellows.

(Only problem is the result can sound poo on a regular system  which I thought was the point of a good set of monitors. Parts can easily get blurred together and the vocals can get sucked back  )

Listening to the mixes on a regular system appears to highlight a serious lack of mixing skills on my part, by it sounded fine on the monitors... so what do you do  new monitors? or just more experience and constantly testing mixes out on standard systems?

OK, I don't know if I'm a freak for doing this but I tend to spend my money on signal chain (just where I am at the moment). And it's not like I wouldn't like a nice set of monitors but I just EQ an alright set of home stereo speakers (JVC SK-303's) They certainly aren't the be all and end all but I know them very well and my mixes translate. So am I wrong for thinking I can do without?

I use "fake" monitors.
I made some out of wood and cardboard and just sit them on my desk. When people complain that they can't hear anything I tell them it's because I'm the professional audio guy and I have better ears than they do.

Exactly. I've been using them so long my ears are used to them.

i've used nothing before, and my ears have no training. does this mean i am not worthy of them!?! i cant seem to get down the proper use of a compressor, so it doesnt matter if i use the ns10's or if i use my broken ipod earpieces...

ahh! im having much difficulty in the studio today!

Currently using a pair of UltraLinear "Studio Comparators" that I had in storage. These are maybe 15rs old, and sound kinda distant. My fave setup, which I'll go back to soon is...no shit...A pair of RadioTrash o.7's and a homebrew subwoofer (12" dualcoil in a 8cu/ft box) Inyour face clarity and the sub goes a long way toward DC. Verysweet sounding rig for next to nothing invested. If I had the bucks......?

I use a pair of NS10, JBL 4311, and Digital Design speakers (no model number). Since I listen to music in the car so much, I always listen to my mixes there to work out the final touches. When I got my NS10's I went to Mars (before they went out of business) to listen to all the monitors they had there; I used a CD of one of my mixes. At the time I had a pair of Alesis Monitor Two's and most of the monitors at the store sounded like them. The NS10 were the only ones that reveled the bad parts of my mix, everything else made them sound too good. Later, I got the JBLs to help with the low end of the mix. Bottom line, I swear by the NS10 for mixing.

NS10s are a defacto secondary reference standard. When you think the mix is baked, its always a good reality check before the burn. That said, I would not want to work on them during editing or building the mix. I need inspiration for this phase and I want the speakers to lie to me a little, except the low end.

B+W 802s > Bryston Power Amp
Truth TA-1Ps > Hafler Pro 1200
and a pair of bose consumer speakers to reference with..

I love all of my speakers, and know them very well.

to the Home Recordist that is looking for an upgrade, but doesnt have a lot of dough...I have to tell you that the Truth TA-1Ps are phenomenal. Too good for words, honestly, and they go for well under a grand for the pair.

I just sold one lucky dude from here one of mine, an extra.

I have a set of krk rockit 5's that i use to mix... i find the hi end to be dull but yet very detailed at the same time, it just lacks brightness (for my taste)

I got Event TR8s.

They go loud.

They big to look at.

They got green LEDs on front.

Me happy.

thats a good point GREEN LED's.

its not often discussed much, the LED colors that is.

I like to stare at my LED, which is BLUE, I like to stare at it for hours and then it starts taking on different shapes and the room starts spinning around and sometimes if I do 3 hours of staring at the LED, trying not to blink,
well...my head kind of sizzles or has a tingly feeling on my scalp, which I like.

you can do the same thing with your thumb though if your monitors don't have LED's. Never done GREEN ones, I suppose that would be more greenish than blueish.

wonder what color the pro's prefer?

Krk rp5's. Not exactly "real moniters" but far from pc speakers so i checked moniters. I also was using so hi fi stuff for reference but my amp crapped out
