Monitors and specialized tasks?

For those of you have more than one set of monitors . . .

Do you ever find yourself using different monitors for different elements of a mix?

I'll give you an example: I have a pair of monitors that I happen to think sound simply badass on electric guitars -- dirty, heavy, clean, you name it. My electric guitar mixes always translate extremely well to just about all systems when I use them to monitor.

I also have a different set that I recently began using almost exclusively for bass and kick. They just seem to help translate the lows really well to many different systems, and I've noticed an improvement in my mixes as a result.

Does anyone out there use different monitors for different tasks, or use a similar approach? What kinds of monitors are you using, and more specifically, have you found anything that works particularly well on translating vocals? That's kind of a trickier area for me.

I still haven't plugged-in my secondaries yet since I loaded-up the new place, so I guess for me, the answer to your question is "no!" ;)

Well, then what might you normally use your secondaries for?

Just an extra check . . . or are there different elements the secondaries might be particularly well-suited for or revealing on?

Chess

why not use the first set and get a sub for them.

Best of both worlds maybe ?

fwiw I use Klipsch Heresey's for secondary monitors for checking the acoustic instruments in the mid and high frequencies. My main (nearfield) are Event PS8's
The Klipsch are really mid heavy due to the horns they are known for. They help me see how the mids and highs are doing for acoustic gtr, snare, cymbals, and mainly percussion. I don't do much vox work, so I can't say for sure it they would help. Maybe I'll check on that in the future.

The Events(8" driver) give me more bass then the 10" driver in the Klipsch. So I can hear the mids and highs better to give me a perspective of "home stereo" translation. But I always check in my truck too.

So I guess I don't use the 2nd set for specific instrument, but more of a certain frequency cross reference? I think it helps for translating to other systems, but I'm still fighting the low end.
But this maybe due to always changing the CR acoustical treatments. I better stop visiting the Acoustic's forum:) LOL.
