Perhaps the wrong place to post it but as I am mostly concerned with vocals it seems fitting. I have only ever monitored with headphones. This (I know) is a stupid question but are studio monitors actually for monitoring your music in real time? Or are they solely for hearing playback?

Well, if you have a control room, (which I'm guessing you don't) monitors are used for listening to whats being tracked and playback. But in your home studio, if you use your monitors during tracking, they will bleed into your recording. So you will want to use headphones during recording, and monitors for mixing (playback).
