Monitoring Vocals

When trying to record vocals, we are having trouble monitoring the signal along with the track it is being recorded with.

We are trying every possible combination of configurations, even the ones the mixer manual says to try!

We are missing something, obviously... has anyone else had this problem.

Hey! Thanks for the smart comments guys!

To anyone who might be of any real help:

We are using a Behringer mixer, octava condenser mic, powerbook g4, and Audacity multitracking software. We are trying to record vocals but can't seem to get any monitor signal in headphones with the other tracks playing, and when we do have a signal, the other tracks re-record onto the vocal tracks...

We are new to this. Those of you with no patience for a novice please don't reply.

I cant answer your question, but how is audacity?
I tried it a year ago or so, and dont remember getting good results.
