Monitoring RME card

I think i'm pretty much set on getting an RME multiset with the PCI card. I know it has 8 outs, but how would i go about monitoring? I plan to have a set of M-audio SP-8X by Christmas. I know the monitors are powered and have volume control on the back, but doesn't that stay set? Would i use a small mixer like a mackie or something? If so...would my monitor signal be degraded if i went the budget mixer route with a behringer or something comparable?

I basically just want to control the level of my monitors in the most inexpensive fashion. I won't be using a mixer for anything else.

You can run a pair of outputs directly to the monitors (if the monitors are powered) for basic monitoring. If you want to have more options than a mixer will definately help. If you are only using it for monitoring than a behringer would probably work fine.
