Hi - I've got Cakewalk Home Studio, Reason 2.5, an M-Audio 2496 and a mini Behringer UB502 mixer. It's just for demos, so it works fine - apart from one thing.

Let's say I'm overdubbing a vocal; if I can hear the backing track plus the 'new' vocal in the cans - then Cakewalk is RE-RECORDING the backing track AND the vocal, on top of the previously recorded backing track; if I can just hear the backing track, muted Tape-to-mix, I won't be able to hear my voice in the cans - this is the only way I can record the voice alone, over the existing backing.

Unfortunately, "no voice" in the cans means I sing like a toffee.

Is there anyway I can HEAR both, but only record the vocal? Using the equipment I have, that is?

monitoring etc

Thanks; I did read the very helpful DAW article, but it didn't really apply to me, as the Behringer mixer has different (less!) functions.
Actually, M-Audio's website is pretty helpful. Go to http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faqs and it will give you some straight FAQs which, in my case, told me what I needed to know.

The difference is, as everything was already set up in the windows mixer, I needed to get into the M-Audio mixer and tweak until it worked like I wanted it to. I'm sure it won't be the last time I have to get in there and fiddle, but at least I now know where the problem lies.

Thanks again.
