Monitoring Insert Effect

I plugged my guitar straight in to see if I like the amp simulator better than my actual amp, but I can't hear the product until I record it and then apply the insert.

Any help on how to monitor the input with the insert running in Cubase 4?

Thanks

Anyone? I'm looking through the manual but haven't found an answer yet.

Is this even possible?

First of all go to the control panel for your interface and turn down or mute the slider that controls the direct monitoring of your guitar. Make sure the slider that controls your software output (i.e. the mix from Cubase) is not muted or turned down. In Cubase set up the channel with the plug-in, etc. as if you're going to record, then click the "monitor" button on the channel. The monitor button can be found on the left of the strip-chart display for the channel in question.. it's a little round button with a speaker icon on it, next to the "R" and "W" buttons.
