Monitoring/Burning Problems

I am losing volume in the burning process on my Fostex MR8. The playback before burning sounds great in Numark monitors and Sony headphones. But the finished CD has a very low volume when playing on a home/car stereo.

I have tried using the lame mastering effects on the MR8 and get the opposite problem with lots of cliping. There seems to be no happy medium. Is there anything I am overlooking or is that the best I can expect from my low end recorder?

Why don't you export the stereo mix unmastered to your computer then do the mastering in the computer to bring up the volume?

The Fostex uses a 'summing' algorithm (my Boss BR600 does as well) so that when you are mixing the accumulated track volumes don't clip. I'm guessing all stand-alone digital recorders do this.
Export your mix to a computer and master on that (or better yet, have someone else do the mastering).
