Hi all,

This may be a stupid question, so advanced apologies if it is!
I use a Focusrite Sapphire 6 USB interface to record vocals into my DAW.. Which is Cubase 5.
I use the monitor socket on the front to monitor my vocal on the way in..
But obviously the effects and plugins i use in Cubase on the vocal, don't come through the monitor.
Is there anyway to hear the processed sound on-the-fly as I record?
That would be awesome...

Thanks!

The general answer is yes, and it's done through software monitoring (as opposed to hardware monitoring, which is what you currently do).

The specific answer for Cubase needs to come from a Cubase expert, because I don't know how (or whether) Cubase allows software monitoring.

However, software monitoring, specially when the signal has effects, can often result in latency. This means you hear the signal a number of milliseconds after you sing.

I think the answer is the Mixer knob on the front, but I could be wrong. If the sapphire is also your computer's sound output, meaning that it pipes all your system sounds and everything out through the monitor outputs, then you can dial in exactly what you want to hear from the monitors - all your raw mic input, all your system (and therefore post-processed) audio, or a balance of somewhere inbetween. Hence the Input/Playback labels on the knob.

It's part of the answer, but not the complete answer. OP wants to hear the stuff being recorded with effects as it's being recorded. This requires the enabling of software monitoring.

Appologies, I dont have a picture.

On the channel strip, in the mixer or where the tracks are. there will be a big record button, (genric red with black circle in the middle) which you will know as the record enable button. Just above or next to this button there is a small button with the genric speaker symbal on. If you click on it, it should turn yellowy gold, this is the input monitoring button. When activated you should be hearing your voice when talking/singing in the mic with the processing you have put on the track audiable. Hope this helps.

Excellent guys, thanks a lot for your help.
Enabling software monitoring did the trick with the little speaker button on the channel strip.. I did wonder what that was there for.
Latency is a pain in the ass though.. but it's still useful for gettin and idea of how the input will sound post-processed.
