Monitor (video) question?????

I just recently got a newer and bigger monitor for my computer.

I had had a 15" Tandy sumpmerother (which was described in more than one place on the web as the WORST monitor ever made) and now have a 17" IBM.

The main problem with the Tandy was it would only display 16 colors and the screen area was fixed on the "readers digest for seniors" size.

I had been led to believe that this was a problem inherent in the monitor itself but now after plug-n-playing the new monitor, it will only display in 2 or 16 colors and the screen size is fixed.

Is this a driver problem or a board problem?????

There is no video card just the onboard video hook-up which is supposed to be 3D direct draw and all of that.

Nope, sorry.... you cannot access those extra colors without sendng me a check for $1000, payable to "Cash".....


(OK, Just Right-click on the desktop, go to the Properties>Settings tab and change it to what you want....)
 
Tried that....

actually what I was getting at was that there are no choices in the settings tab other than 2 or 16 colors and there is no selection of screen sizes available.
Just the 640 x ###.

So .....do I need to get drivers for 256 colors and different screen resolution?????

Why don't you post your system specs.

We can't help you if we don't know what you have...

The problem is obviously one of not properly installed videocard drivers.
Check what videocard you have in your computer, download the latest drivers and install those.

Yep, monitors don't care about color depth and they do have a maximum resolution (usually around 1024x768 or higher). Update your video drivers or get a better video card for around $50.
 
There is no card, per se.....

Just the on board video chip.

Which is supposed to be 32bit true color compatible and able to render 3-d graphics.
No indication of screen resolution though.

Anyway....the MB is a Jetway 630b (SiS chips) and has on board video and on board sound.
Got a AMD k6-2 533Mhz processor and 384MB ram.

The only card is my sound card (an Audiowerk 2).

Thats why i'm thinking that maybe its a BIOS issue.

If I can avoid a video card I would prefer it cuz I only have 3 slots on this board and I have a USB card to install and want to add another sound card(hopefully a Layla).

Drivers....???

How do I update the drivers on board the MB?????

what OS are you running- updating drivers is a little different in different OS's
 
I havent used 98 in a while but your looking for the windows device manager- try right clicking on the "My Computer" icon on the desk top- look for hardware or device manager or something like that. Then look for "display adapters" in the device manager- click the plus sign to expand the list of display adapters to choose from (theres probably only one) then double click or right click and hit properties on your display adapter and look for a button that will update your driver (in xp there is a tab at the top for drivers- may be different in 98) you can tell windows to search for a better driver than whats installed or if you find a better one on the net or somethin you can specify a path.

Maybe someone who has win98 will come along and elaborate- good luck sir:cool:
 
Fixed it.

Had to load new grapgics drivers for the chipset.

Works like a charm now.
