Monitor types?

Gettin' kinda comfused on this and hopefully someone can break it down for me. What are the diffrences in monitors? Passive, powered, near-field............anything else?

Passive monitors need an amp to power them, powered are self powered.

Near field are monitors you listen to at a close distance, usually within 6 feet (I think?).
