monitor speakers = bookshelf at cc?

curiosity check here........what is the difference between monitor speakers and some book shelf home theater ones from circuit city? and what about some edirols off of musiciansfriend.....or the samson monitor speakers? high end isnt an option and I think my limit is somewhere around 150 and thats pushing it......i think bologna and frosted flakes can get me through

Simply put....monitors are designed for mixing where as speakers are designed for listening....speakers color sound, not a true representation of the mix.
