Hi,
I've just got into computer recording and am running Logic Audio Gold with an m audio
audiophile soundcard. My system is a Dell Pentium II V400 with 256 MB of Ram and a 6 gig hard disk,
65% of which is unused at the moment. I need to get a pair of decent monitors for around
200 pounds (350USD). Is that possible? The audio outs from the audiophile would have to go
thru an amp before the monitors, correct? Any suggestions for an amp as well?

I suggest you get "Active" monitors (monitors with a built-in amp). You can get Event ps-8 acitve monitors for about $650 American Dollars, which has a 8 inch woofer. Or if you are willing to spend a little more money for more quality, you can get Event 20/20 acitve monitors for $850.

I say get Active monitors.
