Linux Man...
I am looking to upgrade the old Alesis Monitor Ones soon, and have been looking for good reviews on monitors in the 600-1300 (pair) range. I can find lots that say Monitor X is the best thing since sliced bread, but they never say what they don't like, or if compared to Monitor Y it is better.

Anyone know of any monitor shootouts?

I am interested in:

Tannoy Reveal Actives
Mackie HR 624
Mackie HR824
KRK V8
KRK V6
DynAudio (cant remember the model)
Tannoy System 800

and probably some more .....

Good reviews? User experiences? I mainly mix rock and blues occasionally some country.

Yo Mike:

You left out YORKVILLES. They now come in powered or passive. I use the YSM-1 passives -- nice bang for the bucks.

Of course, there are better.

Another pricy pair might be Adam monitors with their "ribbon" tweeter or something like that. I just glanced at an ad for them in EM.

Whatever you get, they will be better than the Alesis.

Green Hornet :D :p  :p

I know it won't be hard to step up from the Alesis product line, as it is entry-level. There may be several brands I need to try out, audition, research etc that were not on my original list. Thanks for some input. Anyone else have any?

MIKE

dont waste your time with the mackie hr624's. is it really worth the 100 dollar price difference (i think, i know its not very much)? the answer is no.

Most of them are good, and since it's your ears and your money, you should really go listen.

"Chris Ertel is a dance music producer as well as a DJ" - LOL

I didnt see Yorkville YSM1p's or Tannoy ProtoJ's in there.......

So the Truth's win out. At least on the second Article. I have read the first, and that article didn't do much for me.

Anybody own the Truth's? I want to find a place that has them along with tons of other monitors to really listen to. It is difficult to find a dealer with Tannoy, KRK, Mackie, Behringer, Yamaha and Yorkville all in one spot.

Anyway, thanks for the help so far, I am still educating myself for the purchase.

as far as i know the truth monitors are copies of the mackies. at long&mcquade here in canada , they have them side by side with an a/b box. they sound identical to me. and the truths are half the price.

they are NOT identical!!

nor are they copies of the mackies. notice the mackies are not ported. yet the behringers are. also the name sorta copies the genelec format. 2031a similar to 1031a. and the behringers are shit anyway. if you cant tell the difference between them, there's probably a lot of speakers you cant tell the diff between.

i would also have to say that that guy (chris ertel?) really doesnt know what he's talking about.

no they aren't identical, but thhe truths sound good for the most part... its all about the room also.. i've done mixs with the truth s and they came out very clean.. they have a smooth high end(some find it splashy) but the mids are a little light... for $400 hey they're nice monitors..

Well tomorrow I am going to Woodwind & Brasswind (giant music store in Northern Indiana) to check out all kinds of monitors. This is the only place anywhere near me I could find that carried all the aforementioned brands...and then some.

I am going to bring a CD of some stuff I want to hear. I'll give opinions when I return.

behringer vs. mackie

I have heard both and the mackie deliver a better sound but when you are on budget the behringer units are probably the way to go. They are indeed a copy of the makcie 824's. This is what behringer does. They copy people. The bend the rules as far as they can without breaking them and getting sued for copyright infringement. Take a look at their mixer line both stduio and DJ. The studio mixers are replica's of mackie and the DJ mixer's Pioneer.

Anyhow, the behringer's will suffice for entry level studio's. I would certainly not discount them completely.

after using them vs the mackies.. if anything..IMO they're copies of Genelecs.. i think at one time someone said they had the same 8inch driver but the gen's have cleaner amps and better crossovers.. or maybe that was for the mackie..
the driver on the mackies, aren't they Vifa? i think the behringers are

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Mackie uses Vifa, but I thought Genelec uses Seas....? This doesn't necessarily say much though. Both of these suppliers offer similar products with similar technologies. And a relatively large manufacturer like Mackie or Genelec can have units custom built for them. This can translate into paired down versions for cost savings, or full blown versions for higher performance. So, you can't say the end products are comparable just because they use the same supplier. As far as Behringer, I don't know.

Anyone remember the recent shoot-out article about low-cost monitors? (I've seen it mentioned in other threads at this site if you want to find it.) The evaluator raved about the Truths, for the money (his #1 choice for value), and noted that he and his magazine staff called them "Mackie Lites" because of the similar sound. There must indeed be some reason for all of these
Mackie-Behringer comparisons that I keep running across.

Good luck with your monitor search,

J.

No they are not. The behringers are ported!!! Mackies, are uhm...not! Thats a pretty big difference, especially since people talk about the mackies non-portation a lot.

im thinkin bout gettin me a pair of those yorkies actually. but i cant decide whether or not to go powered or with the unpowered cool lookin ones. is there a dif besides price?

Well after listening to the Mackies 824s, 624s, Event 20/20s (The 800$ ones) and a couple sets of Genelecs, I like the Genelecs best, but can't afford them. I think I am going to get the 824s. They seem pretty darn nice. The mids are a little weird on them, but according to the website they are very flat. Maybe other speakers are not so flat and that is what I am more used to.

Anyway, I didn't get to listen to the KRK V8s, though I really wanted to. Oh well.
