ive been looking at the hr824 mackie for moniotrs. I have this marantz stereophonic reciever model 2225. i think its 200 watts. I was wondering if that could be used to power passive speakers if i got them. And also, what are some good passive speakers. my budget is around 500. but if i need to get an power amp for the speakers i'll probably just get new active speakers. thanks

Dyslexia? Nay.

For what you are using, you could get a pair of Yorkville passives for around 200 or so, depending on shipping charges. Of course the Mackies might be better but the Yorkvilles will do the job.

If you get active speakers, you might have to juggle the way you plug them in to a stereo receiver. I use an integrated amp to run all of my tape decks, CD, etc., and it only has wire-bind posts for speaker wire. I suppose there is a way to patch in actives; yea, verily, there is always a way.

You can get Yorkville on the net and they will tell you the closest dealer to you.

Green Hornet :D  :p

Generally speaking, the best bang for the buck in monitors come from bi-amplified active speakers. However, since you have a power amp you can get away somewhat cheaper by getting the Yorkvilles. (Yorkville have active version of their monitors that are around twice as expensive as the passives).

The absolute best thing to do is to go to stores where they sell monitors, and listen to them, using the same music (preferrably something you know well and think sounds really good). That way you kind find what you like, and decide if you think the extra money for actives are worth it.
