If I plug into my mixer with headphones, or a bass amp acting as a monitor, does it make much of a difference? Do I need to spend 500$ if It's a simple studio with 2 bass amps being the sound source.

Just send the output of your bass amps to the inputs of your computer.
Monitor with the speakers your using, and if you want, track with head phones.
Only thing is, typical computer speakers don't produce bass frequency's well (or at all) so you might wanna look into studio monitors.

well, i figure everything sounds okay through them other than the guitar, vocals sound good, bass sounds great, I'm trying to not spend money basically and am needing a sound, what I'm asking is, can i just use a (2)bass amps or a bass and guitar amps as monitors until i can afford them? It wont damage my amp will it?

headphones don't give you a very accurate sound for mixing. i know i used to always mix in headphone (when i lived in apartments) and was always disappointed when i took things out to car stereos.
it is very important to have good speakers. sorry to say it.

Hummm... Are you just practicing or something..?.. If you use the Bass amps for monitors ( even if you plan on mixing what you record elsewhere with " real monitors") chances are, what you recorded is not gonna be well represented by the Bass amps..More than likely if you try to record something like electric keys, strings, vocals,etc. and monitor thru the amp, will have exaggerated boost of hi mids/hi's ( treble) because of trying to EQ what you aren't hearing from the Bass amp..If you can spare one of the Bass amps, I'd sell one and get some decent monitors..Good luck..

Thanks for the info. I will have to get some monitors, I found a very nice pair at a place called 'The sound room' for fairly cheap.

Best bang for the buck...
$20 headphones, a $30 instrument to USB interface, and free virtual bass amp software. You'll sound like a million bucks!

You can also just use an old stereo reciever and some speakers as Monitors , will probably sound better than useing bass amps ......
I got this really nice sounding Altec Lansing 2.1 Computer speaker setup at the salvation army for $20 that I use just for Mixing and playback which actually sound better than my Yorkville Powered studio monitors that I Paid over $300 for so there are Cheap options out there .....

Thanks for the info guys, I'll probably just get me a stereo and some speakers, not looking to spend a whole lot on such a thing.
