Hi all,

I'm ready to buy active near-field monitors. I've asked all my friends who make music what they recommend, and the consensus was to get KRK V8's. Now, they run about $600 each, so I may have to go for the KRK V6's, which are only $700 - 800/ pair, as $700 is already spending more than I planned on.

I've read mixed reviews online, but I know I can only trust that so much (e.g., one person complained about the lack of bass response, but perhaps they were used to hyped bass). Does anyone here have any experience that you'd like to share with the KRK V6's, V8's or both ideally?

Do you have other recommendations?

thanks,
Dave

I couldn't work without my V8s.........! (I didn't care for the V6s though......)

I've been using the V6's for several months now, and consider them to be excellent. When I auditioned them, I compared them to the V8's (which were out of my budget too), and found them to be very similar sounding, with a little less bass extension. You are right in the fact that many other speakers of this size tend to have hyped (mid) bass. The V6's on the other hand are very honest with their bass, and rolloff natually. I add a sub only to check the sub bass material, otherwise, I just mix with the V6's on their own.

I like 'em a lot, but your mileage may vary. Give them a listen (take 'em home if you can), and then decide.

Blue,

I now have 824's. But before I got them, I was testing a lot of lower end monitors like the KRK Rockits. They seemed kinda midrangy. A little dull and nothing on bottom. Are your KRK's not like that?

curious

I found the V8s far superior to the Mackie's when I A/B'd them.........

The V-series sound nothing like the smaller KRK units............

Because Rip and I have very different ears and monitor selection is VERY subjective.............

Kinda like color and style of underwear..........!

I listened to most of the low end stuff and after owning some Tannoy Reveals (which sounded fair) for a short time, I got the Mackies. I couldn't afford an equal Genelec set.

I have found the top end to be very clear and just under being harsh. I like the stereo field and the accuracy seems to be very good except for a bump in the low mids. I do however, attribute the bump partially to my room.

Anyway.... my opinion.

I still would like the Sub. I haven't quite gotten to where I can mix and not need to hear it in my truck with a sub. Outside of that, I am doing pretty well with them.

Bear,
Do you have a sub with your V8's? Thought about it?

No sub on my V8s, which are my primary monitors... my secondary monitor system has a sub -- a pair of Hafler-powered Yorkville YSM1I'ss with a Tannoy 110 active sub....

The V8s defintely don't need a sub!

Unless your doing music that requires a sub like hip hop and such, your actually better of in a home studio with a monitor with less of a bass response (unless you have a well treated room), so I wouldnt really worry about that.
