Yllo _ i need to get rid of some cash I saved, I'm just a lowly 4 track cassette guy with some decent mics, a p.a. & a bunch of guitars, I'm looking to get a mic preamp channel strip to improve my sound quality a shade. I'm pretty much recording guitars, vox, bass & percusion. Due to no inserts on my 4 track I am limited to what I can add during mixdown (compression - eq/effects to some extent) and I know these things should be somewhat avoided during recording because you can't undo them. Should I worry much about this considering my format at this time or should I save my coins for a digital setup with more options??? I was looking at a VC1Q, Mindprint or ART ProChannel, will it make a big difference with my 4 track or is that like buying goldplated rims for a chevette. Sorry to ramble-I need counseling.

i'd ditch the 4 track and start building a computer setup. it doesnt matter how much outboard gear you have if your foundation is solid to begin with. if youve got a computer, which i assume you do since you are posting here, get a 24bit soundcard with that money and use your 4 track as a poor man's mixer. then spend 34 bucks and get a copy of n-tracks multitrack software at fasoft.com
youve now have an adequate foundation to build up from and soon you will be able to plunge into the black hole of recording.

Amen Brother!

Ditch the Cassette beast.

I owned a Tascam 424 for damn near twenty years and never came close to realizing the quality that I wanted. I made the mistake of buying preamps, compressors, effects, Hi - Low & and low - high impedance transformers, and finally finally bought a digital board. I'm not sure what board you've got, but I bought mine back before Tascam put any XLR balanced connectors on any of the inputs. All of the inputs were like this psuedo medium impedance that would compromise the sonic quality of either a High or Low impedance mike. Nothing sounded right. I stopped mixing on it about 19 years but didn't actually unload it until last year.

Go digital!! Prices are falling all over the place. This money will get you the most bang for your buck right off. Then you can start saving for the really sweet equipment, give you some time to shop around for deals.
