ok i liked "mogul"...so much that i went back and listened to "stone"...and the only question i have is..is there a board in here where you can sell all your equiptment?..because really i dont need mine any more.....maybe theres a good gardening site some where...............good lord...

Cool tune!

When I saw the title I had to check it out. I worked there (and other high rent areas of LA) for 10+ years and you don't know how close you nailed it!

Good job on the mix too. The only thing that really stood out to me was the canned drums but that's a pet peeve of mine and I realise most homereccers don't have the option of real ones.

If you really wanna fit in down in the 'Bu though you'll have to lose the draw, put on your sweats & ugg boots and trade the burger for a latte.:D

Hey--thanks for indulging me on this one!

jamal--I appreciate your enthusiasm, this one was just for giggles. And don't get down on yourself. I've been screwing around with recording since I was ten. Like me, you'll learn things along the way. This recording is a few notches from pro. If Blue Bear comes by, he'll no doubt set me straight in several departments! Sometimes, home recording can just be for fun, right? One thing leads to another.

M. Brane--God, I love that moniker! "Trade the burger for a latte!" LOL You are right! I tried different voices for this and ended up with the drawl. I sang it like Dylan once, which was funny, but he's my hero so I couldn't insult him. I tried a Cars/punk voice too, but that kinda went nowhere. Maybe I should a gone Valley Guy!

Oh, those canned drums were real! Well, at least an 8 bar phrase that I played and then looped. I'm such a lame drummer, I figured that was good enough for this diversion.

Thanks for listening. Hope you laughed a little...

Good writing as usual and a good mix. I too thought the drums were canned. I think it's the snare drum sound that does it. I'd like to hear the snare tuned a little looser. that's the only thing that stands out to me. Great song though and, unfortunately, it describes the biz.

I didn't think the drums were canned but I thought you had someone else playing :D. The strait kick pattern almost driven me crazy :)

I like the production on this, the dialog in the begining and the end, realy cool. Did you record the car sound?

Sorry I didn't get the humor, probably because I couldn't understand the words very well. I got to listen few more times.

cheers

here's the lyrics:

xMogul Of Malibu

I’ve heard about these record labels
They’re getting richer every day
They ride in limousines
Drinking fine Champagne
I hear they’re making millions
Selling little CD’s
Getting’ 20 bucks a pop
Costs ‘em 20 cents each
Now that’s the kind of dirty little job for me
If I scratch and claw, someday I’ll be

The mogul of Malibu—the ruler of the charts
A mover and a shaker—and a patron of the arts

I’ll find some spikey haired bastards
Who can write hit songs
I’ll fill their heads with stars
As I’m stringing them along
Yeah, I’ll butter ‘em up
With promises and lies
First, I’ll get their publishing
Then all their future rights
Hey, I’ll sign ‘em to a contract That they’ll probably never read
They’ll get a few crumbs--And the rest will be for me…I’ll be

Chorus

I envision what my futures all about
Nubile little divas on my casting couch
Tributes to my greatness in trade magazines
I’ll be rubbing shoulders with the crème de la crème

I’ll have rock and country bands
And I’ll sign a few rappers
Those productions cost nothin’
And I heard they shut down that Napster
All this garbage they’re recording
To me all sounds the same
But if I can make some profit
I don’t care if its lame
Hey they all burn out—sooner or later
I’ll use ‘em up like toilet paper

great job crawdad but, I figure you would want me to be as critical as possible sooo,

there is some crackling on that electric guitar in the left.. It is definitely there.. I didnt read the other posts yet to see if it was mentioned, but that crackle bothers me man.. It's mostly in the left.. I thought some of the backups were a bit loud in only certain parts.. I also thought the narrative at the end was a bit too loud.. keep in mind I'm being critical to the point of paranoia.. :D

Aside from that, another great tune! :D I like the air in the drums..
and it was funny. :D Great job on vocals as usual..

How could anyone think that snare is canned?LOL.It screams "Im real".;)

This is a fun tune crawdad and sounds like something the eagles would have written for the heck of it during the "Long Run" era.

Fun tune!:D

Lt. Bob—Yeah—I’m still screwing with those drums. I never heard anybody say that they sound like a drum machine before. It’s the hardest thing to get because there are vastly different drum sounds and mixes, depending on the tune. A great jazz drum sound might really suck on something else. Yes—I am so sick of the biz, I had to vent and try and turn a negative into a positive. Fortunately, something worthwhile came in the mail, so I have a better project to work on now! And I don’t have to screw with drums at all!

Fed—the car was just off a sound effect CD. Other than the loop for perfections sake, I was thinking how so many records I’ve heard have the same inane part for like 6 minutes, so that was a bit of a send up. The pitched up BG vocals too.

Sam—Hope you don’t mind I call you Sam. Its just more personal. As usual, your ear quickly found the flaws. I went against my normal routine and just thought "get this thing over with—its just a lark". So I slid on a bunch of things, since the whole purpose was to get a few smiles here on the BBS. I’ll never do anything else with this one. Other things, I take more seriously and I probably should apply the same standards to everything. Like I said, lots of excuses! Most of all, I’m glad you got the humor!

Kramer—I COULD actually hear Henley singing this in his high snarling rock voice! That’s funny!

hey thanks for posting lirics, i'm nowhere close to music biz but thats some clever stuff. it did cross my mind that the pattern was intentional.

cheers

kewl

Mmmm.... "Kajagoogoo snare drum??" :D:D (For some reason, I'm thinking "Too shy shy, hush hush...") -- nah, there wasn't THAAAAT much reverb ;)

Masterful mix (what else should we expect from chessrock's hero? ;)) Yeah, the clipping is there -- sounds like a crinkly little cellophane wrapper. Vox are awesome. Had to laugh how he pronounced "crem de la creeeeeme". Toilet paper LOL, esp. how it was performed. The vocal tone makes me think you could actually sing for reals ;):p -- it has that nice resonance to it.

craw, you are the ultimate pro; this sounds tight, and if it were 1983 again -- this would be right up there with Weird Al's "Eat It".

"...I wanna know why I cain't git a date with Kim Bass-injer tonight..."

This is beautiful...great sendup, man. Had me laughin' the whole time, so I gotta go back and listen again. :D

Oh, those canned drums were real! Well, at least an 8 bar phrase that I played and then looped.

Ah, that explains why I thought they were canned. It had a repetitive feel. If that was done on purpose that's cool.

I'm such a lame drummer, I figured that was good enough for this diversion.

My drumming skills ain't no better!:D

I 'aint' gonna critique pure enjoyment;)

I wanna quadruple "FatBoy"!!!

......."spike-haired leetle baystards":D
Great stuff Crawdad, couldnt listen without smiling. Once again, I loved your voice....... even when youre not taking yourself seriously, ........wait, ......"givin the rap group from Santa Monica 2 pts on their record".....LOL:D ...... ruthless!
Like I mentioned in another post, Life #9 is one of the best songs Ive heard in this forum....... and this one, though not in the same class in terms of being a "serious" effort, is another example of your talent. Sometimes just a smile is worth a thousand 32nd note arpeggios, and ground-breaking productions. I look forward to your next one! g

My favorite was the conversation at the begining at the fast food drive through. Or was that a FOOD COURT?

I see no reason why you shouldn't make some cash off this one! Oh wait...did I miss the point?
