So, I was wondering. Would the Mogami Silver Series Cable be a good choice of cable? I know they have the gold neglex, but the price is more than double that of the silver.

Is it really worth it to go a head and pay the extra money or will the silver series do just fine? I need to buy 8 of them...

The Gold will cost me $503.60

The Silver will cost me 183.60

Anyone have any thoughts on this or can recommend equivalent equipment?

I use Mogami 2792 and make my own cables. The tools to set yourself up to make cables will cost about $25. I guestimate 8 cables with Neutrik ends would cost me about $100. I've been using the same cables for 20 years and I don't think any have even hinted at failure. Canare star quad wiring with 5 wires would be the only thing I think of as better but don't get sucked into the cable bullshit routine. It's run by car salesmen and politicians!

You don't need better cable than the Record Plant or Captitol Records used.

I have never seen a cable in a store I would buy - they either suck, are too expensive or are wired wrong.

Just get some 2792 (a reel from Markertek) and some Neutrik ends, the gold ones if you can afford it. Don't fall for the bullshit - save your money for a Neumann.

When the MARS closed down here I bought all thier partial spools of Mogami at the auction for $18

I bought some mogami silver 25ft cables. One of them failed just recently but they have a lifetime gaurentee. I'll get it replaced soon.

I like them but I doubt I'd ever spend that much on cables again. I actually like the ones I made myself better.

If I was going to buy pre-made cables I'd get these: http://www.speakerrepair.com/mm5/me..._Code=37-250x10&Category_Code=25ft-mic-cables

My number one concern when buying cables is durability. I don't buy all that oxygen free copper gold plated crap. I have never in my entire life heard the sound of anything improve by using a more expensive cable.

Ok, sounds like a fun project. Where can I buy some of this wire and parts you guys are talking about? Do you buy it locally or online? Also, can you please give me a check list of tools I'll need?

I got my cable (cheaper if you buy a reel - split it with your buddies) and Neutrik ends from Markertek.

Here's some discussion we had about making guitar type unbalanced cables:
https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=294090

and about soldering:
https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=293879&highlight=SOLDERING

At minimum, I'd want a Weller $18 pencil, some low temp solder, a pair of pliers and a rubber band for a vise and something like a razor or knife to cut shielding. A pair of crap scissors and a rubber bulb desoldering tool wouldn't hurt.

Practice on some stuff first, and read up on it or ask someone who can do it to show you (preferable). Soldering is an art, it can be fun and it can be frustrating, and like many things it takes a little time to get some chops, but to make cables isn't that hard and for sure a great skill to have.

This is going to give me flash backs to when I was 15 and bought my first electric guitar for 15 dollars with the wires hanging out of the back.

My thoughts on connectors: never buy gold.

Gold connectors are snake oil. They tell you its used to make a better connection because gold conducts better, which is false. Gold is actually an inferior conductor. Its used on connection terminals because it doesn't corrode.

There's another side effect. Any time you have 2 dissimilar metals side by side you have a change in capacitance. Even though this capacitance is relatively small, it still degrades the audio signal. Anything in the chain that can degrade the signal should not be in the chain, IMHO.

Let's say I don't have the time or resources to make my own cables. Can anyone recommend the best possible cables for the money spent? I obviously don't want shitty musicians gear cables lol

What the next best thing?

That 10 pack looks pretty good. And I'll have 2 back up cables to put away for emergencies :D

Mogami Silver Series

I am currently using eight of the 25' MSS to mic my drums - yes, it's a big set. I think I paid about $20 per through Musicians Friend. I have used them for about a year and have been very pleased - I have not noticed any noise or appreciable signal loss. They are a bit thin, so I think they are better suited for a static (non-moving) application since they will tend to tangle faster than fatter cables. If you run a lot of gigs, you'd be better of with fatter cables, but for my home studio set-up, they're perfect. Mogami quality, fair price, and a lifetime guarantee to boot. Recommend.

Check out monoprice.com for a large inventory in which to choose from.
I always find the best prices there than anywhere else !!!!

You can buy Pro Co at www.sweetwater.com They seem to be a good cable and have a lifetime replacement regardless of how it might fail. Give it a try.
