Modifying orchestral loops?

I have Acid 3.0 and have experimented with cutting parts of loops and then rearranging them without much success. When I change the pitch of the loop it starts to sound odd. Can this be done with acceptable results??

I normally don't pitch shift more than 1 or 2 octaves when using Acid Pro 3.0 (for that I use Fruity Loops version 3).

In Acid, once you've changed the pitch (and if it distorts), try to change the key (that my take of some or all of the distortion).

Modify the file/loop in Soundforge/cool edit pro/etc and then use them in Acid, I find editting in Acid to be frustrating and I like getting the exact results from eq'ing, compressing, effecting, etc in a better editting program.
