I'd not nitpick the mix, 'cept to say I'd like a little more top end & sizzle on it, overall. Sounds really together & well produced, though. Really authentic.

Sounds real good...I like the vocals alot...I think the original may have been a bit more verby overall, while yours sounds more "upfront".Otherwise pretty much spot on.....nice job!

Reel - Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it.

I agree that there the mix could use more sizzle on top; that's what I get for mixing this with tired ears. I probably should have waited a day before mixing this down but I really wanted to take the song away form the studio last night.

Nonetheless, here are some details about what’s behind the music.

Everything tracked into an HD-24 & Mixed on a 32 channel Soundcraft Ghost.


Acoustic guitar was recorded using a figure 8 with a cardioid on top pointed at the hole from about 2 feet away into Focusrite pres.

Bass (w/dbx compressor) & electric guitar are direct. Keyboards are all vintage 80s Korg & Roland. Piano is an Ensoniq Mirage (more 80s). Drums are actually a live performance, recorded midi, triggering Toontrack EZ Drummer samples (This was the first time using these samples).

All Vocals recorded using an Apex 460 (modified) into a voicemaster pro. Slight compression (RNC) during mixing. Lead vocal effects are a Lexicon MX 200 (studio delay) and backing vocals effects are TC Electronic M300 digital delay.

I think every thing in the 80s was verby . But your right, the original is really reverby to the point it thins things out. I was king of going for the vintage sound but with a more mordern up-front push.

Little deeper verb on the guitars and lead vocal; guitars can come up in the mix. Maybe a double tracking of the guitars will give them some more complexity.

Supercreep, thanks for taking the time to provide the feedback. I found about 3 different versions of the original song; all just a bit different. When we listened to the original "radio" version, we were surprised at how thin the song actually is; especially the guitars. The original is very wet (tons of reverb - typical 80s), I wanted to say in the spirit of the song but thought it would add a little modern flair by keeping the reverb a little mellower.
