I'm (starting) the research to build a new computer for recording only. Last system I built ws an AMD XP1500 when they hd just come out, so it's been a while and I haven't kept up with chipsets/processors/memory etc.

I tend to lean towards AMD, but my initial reading shows that a P4 might be the way to go.

I'll be using an Aardvark Pro Q10 and Cubase SX 2.0.

I'm searching the threads but the amount of info is almost overwhelming. I just bought my wife a new Dell P4 2.4GHz, 256MB, 80GB, WinXP system for $470. I'm almost tempted to try it out first.

Any suggestions on a motherboard or chipset for either AMD or Intel? I'm looking for stability first off and value next. I'm not planning to do RAID or anything like that, but SATA might be in the picture. Still not sure if the performance is there for these audio applications.

Asus P4P800.
Fast stable reliable clockable. And cheap.
Everything you want in a mobo

motherboards change as fast as the wind. from week to week.
if were me i would go with a nforce chipset , amd barton processor,512 ram,
and two hard drives. fyi ive had friends get no probs from some of the cheapest throwaway mbds. best thing is to load your multitrack software plus sound card on the mbd and try before you buy.
a good white box dealer should let you do this.

if you want speed 64bit is the way to go right now but it is "kind of" new, most of the bugs have been worked out and being AMD holds the key at the moment price is not all that of what intel is known for, if you want cutting edge go 64bit otherwise i would suggest nforce2 chipset, asus, epox, msi, etc, known brand name boards, do a user review search for top preformance boards and look for "user" reviews, not "web" site reviews, the difference being web sites mostly candy coat there reviews to keep getting hardware to review, hence, bad review, no hardware for that maker. not brain surgery...

we're at the end of 32bit computing entering 64bit and expected prices to move down but there actually moving up slightly, to try and force users to move to 64bit making 64 seem like an even value compaired to 32, eh, resellers ugh, i haven't moved yet and haven't researched it all that much but the price should drop after xmas 04 should make it even more more viable, there's a few web sites that keep up with 64bit but it's from a gamers view, of course MS suggerst all users run 64 with lamehorn also, just a thought...
