Hi,

My recorder can be controlled remotely using midi machine control.

I'm looking for a small unit that will send mmc messages for transport functions, something about the size of the small remote for Adat.

I don't want to invest in a sequencer, and don't have enough room in my vocal booth for a keyboard.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Best to all,
Pete

What is your recorder? Are you looking for a remote so you can control it from the booth?

Any midi device can be configured to send MMC messages. Even a small keyboard can be configured so that when you hit a certain key it will play, stop, punch in, etc. The flexibility will depend on your recorder and the types of messages it will receive.

Tex,

Thanks for the reply.

The recorder is a Yamaha 2816 that I would like to control from the booth.

I don't know to much about midi, just basic connections.
I'm afraid if I buy a keyboard I won't be able to configure it.

The manual has only very basic information on doing this,it says you can operate all the transport functions using MMC.
I just don't have a clue how to do it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Best to you,
Pete

I couldnt tell you how to do it exactly. You'll need the manuals. But any midi controller should work fine. They are all pretty standard. Some may come with presets to control certain hardware so if you can find one that is setup to control your yamaha you will save a lot of manual reading.

Can most software be setup to do that, like Cubase, Cool Edit, Acid, Nuendo? I know some of them can use controllers, that I guess are MMC, but I never thought about just using my keyboard. What a cool idea. Also, can ADATs use that, like an old XT?

Looking at it in a new light,

Mast...

The answer to that is maybe. If the unit has a midi port on it than it probably can be controlled. Most of the bigger programs like Sonar, Cubase and Nuendo probably can. I'm not sure about CoolEdit though.

Check the specs to see if they accept MMC. Most midi software/hardware will let you assign any midi note to start and stop. I wont say that all recorders with midi are this flexible but some are.
