Ok, Im really geting good at the music I make. Now I need to really get in the recording of it. I want to record to my computer because of all the editing features available. Im buying an audio card, software. Should I get an external mixer(Mackie)?
Would I mix into the audio card or after?

Thanks,
Dave

I have one.

I'm new also.

I use the MACKie 1202 VLZ pro mixer ($349)

I like it because it has phantom power you need for some large condenser mics. It also has built in pre amps for the mics.

Do you have to have one. Not sure, but it's nice.

You'll probably use the recording software you're buying to mix down your tracks. The only thing you'll use the mixer for is the preamps during tracking. So, if you are going to get a multiple input card, a mixer is nice 'cause it has enough preamps so you can utilize all of you're inputs at once. Or if you have only a stereo card, you can use the mixer to create a submix for drums, etc. If you're just going to do one or two tracks at a time, a mixer is probably overkill and you could just use a stand alone pre. Hope that helps.
