I am really new and ignorant in the area of recording. I have inexpensive equipment and only like to record for my own enjoyment.
Recently, I bought a condenser mic and am using it through a Behringer Euro mixer with phantom power. First attempt was mediocre. I know I have to be doing something wrong because I got better sounds from a dynamic mic.
I have noticed that when I plug the mic into the mixer there are two "out" jacks at the top right hand end of the mixer- one says "control room out" and the other one says "main out"- which one do I use to send the sounds to the fostex digital recorder?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You want to use the "Main Out" "Control Room Out" is for your monitors or speakers.

Also remember that condenser mics pick up alot more room noise than dynamic mics so that may be the reason your having a hard time getting the sound you want. Which condenser did ya buy?

I haven't used this mixer, but it is possible that your issue is with the preamps, especially if you are using small condensers.

I had a similar issue with a mixer that I really only use as a firewire interface.

It is fine with guitars and large condensers, but the small condensers (MXL 603s) sounded a bit like fat frying softly in a wind tunnel when I turned the gain up.

In my case a better preamp fixed the problem. Your issue may be different, and more info on what you are experiencing would help.

The Mic I bought was a MXL 990

Sorry I wasn't specific as to model number. I think maybe I need to work at
tweaking the process with the mic.

Tell us WHAT you're trying to record and HOW you're trying to do it. Be specific. A close vocal, micing a guitar amp, distant pickup of a choir? etc etc

Cheers Tim.
