Mixing Setup...Routing question?

Hello all,

I have a Behringer xenyx 1204usb mixer and I would like to know if I can accomplish this mixing scenario for karaoke gigs.

I have a computer that will output my karaoke songs as well when the karaoke stops, mp3 music will fill in as filler music between performances. I go from the output of my sound card to an EQ to the mixer then from the main outs on the mixer to the PA.

Simple right…ok now I want to keep my vocals separate off the mains and only come out the monitor speakers…but this is where I am running into an issue. When I want to record a karaoke session with both vocals and the karaoke songs. It seems that the only way to get the vocals to the computer is through the usb off the mixer and to the computer that contains what is coming through main output, which needs to have the vocals coming through the PA speakers.

Is there a way to route the vocals through the output when recording and keeping mains and monitors separate when performing?

Thanks,

HRsteve.

Treat you monitors as if they were stage monitors and set up a separate mix for for them including your vocals on one of you aux send busses and sen that into your computer vis a separate card.

The reason I like this crazy setup is that I don't want any drunk karaoke people to blow-up my expensive mains. The venue is a small space and the sound coming from the monitors are sufficient for filling the room. So if I keep the two audio sources separate I can prevent that from ever happening.

I been getting a lot of input from others like panning the vocals to one channel and the music on the other but I tried that and it just doesn't sound right.

So the tricky part is when I want to record the two together...vocals and music without the vocals coming through the mains. But not knowing enough about the routing of this mixer, not sure if it can be done.

But for now it appears that the only way I can get the voices with the music to record from the usb mixer is to have the voices come through the main out.

So you are saying to treat one the aux outs that would have both voice and music like a main output and run that to the input of another sound card into the computer for recording? But nothing I can do with the current equipment I already have?

Well, if I understand you correctly, you're using - or wanting to use - your computer for both recording of the full vocal and and karaoke tracks mixed together, but you also want a second mix sans vocals to send to you mains (including MP3 playback between stes). I don't quite understand the reasoning behind this split to be honest, but so be it.

It's easy to set up two mixes in the mixer using the method I describe; this is done all the time for things like separate stage monitor mixes or headphone cue mixes.

What complicates your situation is your need to send your aux mix through the computer as well because of your need to share that mix with the MP3 playback from the computer. Without getting things really convoluted, this would suggest to me that you're going to need two separate stereo audio paths into and out of you computer. One stereo path would be to accept the aux mix from the mixer and the other one to accept the main out mix. The cheapest way to get that would be to add a second sound card.

Thanks G...I know completely unorthodox…If I had no need to record my sessions back onto the same computer this would be done and over with.

I just thought there could and it seems that there are some ways to finagle and accomplish this but it seems to come back to what you recommended and get another sound card.

What type of card are you referring to? Like a cheap stereo usb input device?

Couldn't you also just get a compressor/limiter to avoid all the confusion? It'd protect your mains at least.

Ok ok ok...I surrender. I ran my monitors out the aux with vocals only and ran music and vocals out the mains with the compressor...done chasing the dream.

Thanks for all your input.

Steve.
