What would you say is the most important thing in mixing, as far as giving space to everything.

A band like Steely Dan sometimes has one drummer and a bassist, yet it sounds so full. And it has space.

What are the keys or some tricks to mixing down well in Cubase SX?

Also, where can I post MP3s to get advice on my mixes?

I'll leave your first question to someone more qualified...

As for posting MP3's, I use www.nowhereradio.com.

You can open a free 15MB account. Click on mine in my signature to see what it's like.

Well, I was going to give away deep and dark secrets but everything I know is in the following books.

The Mixing Engineers Handbook
The Tracking Engineers Handbook
Behind the Glass

Ok, a couple of tips. The fullness is a combination of attention to detail in placing instruments in their proper EQ space as well as compression and limiting which tend to fatten the sound. The spatial characteristics are a combination of close and ambient micing in combination with reverb and delay. Mostly it’s the combination of close and ambient micing which will be 95% of the sound. The ambient sound is a function of the mic, preamp, distance from the source and bounce back from the room.

Once you understand EQ placement, panning, ambient control, mic and preamp coloring, compression coloring, limiting characteristics and reverb/ delay, you can begin to understand how to shape a sound. Reverb and delay alone require knowledge of predelay, eq response, timing the delays to the beat etc.

Now doesn’t that sound simple!

I don't think the question should be "How do I mix well in Cubase". But more along the lines of, "How do I mix, period".

There are tricks that can benefit you with whatever interface you work on.

"Space" can mean different things to people. It can mean ambience and depth (by using delays, reverb, or a real space), or it can mean EQing and level settings on the tracks so that they don't compete, or it can mean how a song is produced and arranged, etc.

Can you be a bit more specific?
