Mixing levels peak

When I go to mix, some of my or my main mix level sometimes peak in the red. It doesn't stay in the red the whole time, just when a long sustain in the vocal. I've turned it down, but it helps for a little while. So in retrospect, is it ok if it peaks and doesn't distort the whole song? Thanks for the suggestions.

Just bring the levels down - No need to clip. It's distortion whether it truly sounds like it or not.
