I have a million questions that I couldn't narrow down to any specific thread title , so please excuse the randomness

Anyway what happened - I'd been using my Logitech 2.1 speakers while mixing my tracks for the last few weeks, and since I've been aiming for the production quality of Bullet For My Valentine's "Poison" album (IMO the best produced metal album ever) I've been adjusting all track EQ/volume levels so it would match BFMV songs sonically. I thought I did a great job with it coz with those speakers my tracks sounded amazing. Again, *those* speakers.

2 days ago I got my Behringer monitors delivered, I plugged them in and.. BFMV sounded fucking brilliant thru them. My tracks sucked like a Utah motel whore :(

So I decided to re-record guitars for one of my songs. First changed my tone/pedals settings based on how they sounded thru the monitors (not my marshall amp like in the past) and when I loaded it in the Cubase it did sound better. But when I tried to apply the same plugins I used the last time, I had some sort of an "producer's block", coz quite honesty I've no idea what I'm doing - just messing around with curves trying to improve the sound.

I can carry on learning from mistakes, but it would help a lot if I'd know at least basics of mixing. I thought I'd write down a couple of things -

1) How do you use Spectrum Analysis? It shows me some graph but I don't get - is it the graph of the track as it is, or it shows the lack of boost in certain frequency ranges? How do I adjust the EQ based on it?

2) Is it OK to boost certain tracks couple of Db up, or it's better to roll everything else down so the track would stand out?

3) What is compression and how do you use it :|

4) When I double click on the track I want to edit and then go to Plugins -> etc, the playing volume of the Preview is so much lower than the actual master volume. So when I play the result in the mix it always sounds different and it's annoying. Or I'm just doing something wrong?

5) Finally, what are most useful plug-ins anyway? I use Equaliser and Multiband but I didn't go further then those coz I haven't learned how to use even them properly yet.

I'll tackle 1 and 5.

1) I know this is going to sound crazy, but audio is best mixed with your ears and not your eyes. Crazy, I know. :)

5) I was going to say you shouldn't use plugins you don't know how to use, but I guess you have to learn someway. LOL. I would first concentrate on WHY you are putting a plugin on a track. If you don't know why, then I would not put that plugin on that track. In a good arrangement, the instruments will actually complement each other. In fact, in the mix contests, about a third of the entrants' mixes are worse than a simple push mix.........

edit - I'll add #2 as well -

2) potato potato - oh I guess that doesn't work in text.... Same difference as long as your master buss is not being overloaded.

I agree with your 5th one, that's why i don't rush applying loads of different plugins.
