hi guys,

im new here and i was hoping to find some mixing feedback for this song

Hey - you certainly put some work in, commenting on just about every song here prior to posting your own. Good for you. Most people don't bother. I figured you have to get at least one comment, but hopefully your only one won't come from me, as I often don't know what I'm talking about!

Overall, it sounds pretty good. It is loud and punchy in a way that I couldn't achieve myself.

I couldn't really figure out what to make of the song itself (which may be a good thing?). The intro doesn't do it justice imo. You've got this retro, verb-soaked guitar lick, backed by modern, kind of artificial sounding drums. When the vocals come in I was surprised. The intro set me up for something else entirely. The vocalist is very good I think. That voice sounds like it would be at home on a commercial recording. Is that you, or are you tracking/mixing others?

So, I wasn't wild about the drum sound myself, and I thought the drum levels were a little too high in relation to other elements (especially the cymbals). The heavy riff at 2:00 sounds cool, especially when you bring in the additional guitar part around 2:18. Again, I was surprised there, as after the intro and verses, I didn't expect that sort of break in there.

I guess the bass could be better defined, I hear some good low end in parts, maybe as more of a supporting role, but wasn't always entirely sure what was producing those lows...all my humble opinion of course, and I'm just listening on cheap bookshelf speakers with a cheap sub, so....thanks for sharing.

I really, REALLY like those vocals.

How did you get such a good sound? What equipment did you use?

Regarding the other parts of the mix, I don't really have any complaints. Like heatmiser said, the drums might be a little loud, but it doesn't sound bad at all.

thank you for taking the time to listen and for your advice on the drums and bass. its me singing, the bass is a synth bass and the guitar is a cheap epiphone with guitar rig. im using a rode nt1a mic, m-audio 410 soundcard and mackie hr824 mk2 monitors. im still tryin to figure out how to get a full fat guitar mix so thanks a lot for your help.

cheers

I'm not able to listen again right now, but are you double-tracking the guitars at all?

Record the same guitar part twice and pan them hard left and right. That's how most people get a full guitar sound.

yes i did that. i found out about that just a while ago.

The different styles in the song are really cool, right up my alley. The little guitar lick in the intro and later in the song sounds Minus the Bearish, and is really cool. Would've loved to hear that sound and style more throughout the song. I am very new to mixing, but I felt like the drums were great to my ears, my only observation is they sounded a little dull to my liking. I like your use of panning. Is there any way you can post a remix of the song given the advice you've already gotten?

I really like the song and the vocal work is outstanding, IMO. The drums are clearly the weak link, and I say this as a non drummer who struggles greatly with programming drums to sound anywhere half decent. Yours aren't bad, it just doesn't seem like the drums mesh very well with the heavy rock sound of the vocals and guitars. What drum program did you use, or did you use loops? Just curious.

I liked the singing and vocal sound. It's a cool overall sound.

Sounds like a little skip or mistake at about :20. Little pop at :54. Little vocal click (I think) at :30.

Not positive, but I think you have a bit of a low end problem. Sounds a bit rumbly down there to me.

I'd raise the vocal level by a db or two. It's a nice sound, but it gets covered up. Especially in the chorus.

The distorted guitars lack a little bit of power. I think they're missing some hi-mid energy. They sound a bit muffled. Maybe a little too much gain as well. They're a little indistinct.

Drums are OK but a little mechanical sounding.

I like the heavy reverb on the guitar riff. I don't usually say that.
