I learn a lot fr you guys, so here's another dumb question:

I know you're not supposed to mix with headphones but I'm not exactly sure why, except that they're too sensitive. Do any of you ever do it? More & more I read about the importance of high quality monitors & for a fraction of the cost my phones are incredibly transparent. I know the acoustics are not the same as w speakers but even monitors can be affected by the room, somewhat. And in either case, you wd need to listen to the mix on a boom box & other systems for comparison...

I use to mix with head phones, but only because i could not afford any monitors. But when you mix with head phones, you can hear alot of stuff that you wouldn't hear on monitors. Sometimes this is a good thing, but here's an example:

I was recording drums about 2 years ago and i was using head phones to mix with. I applyed revurb to all the drum mics and set the effect level to where i thought was not too much and not enough. When i played it on my stereo, the drums sounded dry, because i could hear the revurb better with head phones.

Peace,

i sometimes do headphone mixes(akg 240's) then check out the mix with my monitors.. i end up having to fix the mix with the monitors.

As Zeke said, headphones make it difficult to accurately judge things like reverb and stereo positioning.

Headphones also cause fatique much faster than monitors - which compromises your ability to make correct sonic choices.

Most importantly, headphones cause faster hearing damage - which is a problem if you hope to be an engineer/musician fora long time.

hearing damage?

Mikeh - Why do you say that phones contribute to hearing damage (assuming we keep the level moderate)? I asked that question to an ear doctor once & he said no there is no problem.

Because it's very easy to surpass a moderate level without noticing it.

Yeah,
My older brother lives with my mom and to keep her from fussing about loud music, He stays under the headphones I bought him 80% of the day. Actually thats all he does.

When he talks ,, he shouts !!! Really !!
