i do some pretty bare-bones recording with my tascam 424mkII (just vocals, acoustic guitar and bass). I want to start mixing down onto my hard drive, but i'm not sure where to begin. i know i'll need a soundcard (any suggestions?) and some type of software. what type of software should i get, where can i get it, and can i get it for free? also, what type of audio format will i be working with? can i create mp3s fairly easily? obviously, i'm not a tech wizard, but i think i have some half decent songs that i'd like to get out there. thanks for reading. hope you can help.

Here's what I use.

I have a TASCAM Porta 03 MKII. I have the "RCA" lineout's hooked to the "line in" port of my soundcard. The sound card that I use is a cheap "Vibra 16" ISA Soundblaster soundcard. The software I use to record to CDR's is Easy CD Creator 4 Deluxe. This is a older version but the "CD SPIN DOCTOR" function is great. You can choose to record in 3 steps. 1) Choose line input
2) Choose destination (i.e. CD/R drive) 3)Record.
You can also take out A LOT of background tape hiss with the differn't parameters that "CD SPIN DOCTOR" has. You can also make .WAV files. I don't think you can make .mp3's with the software. The software is not free but it is the great and easy to use. You should find some software to make .wav to .mp3. I just started getting into recording again and I am finding going from analog to digital is GREAT!.
Hope this helps you,

going from tape to digital sucks, unless you're gonna record it track by track onto some software that has a ton of "cleaning tools." when you listen to trash analog sound on a digital source, you hear so much that you wish you never would have to hear. do yourself a favor, and just record onto the pc, or mac.

If you record on to your hard drive, isn't that still recording to digital? PCM? I disagree, somewhat to your opinion on "trash analog". I can see if you don't have your levels right and maybe have to many "pops" from punching in new music on the same track.

let me clarify. on a really cheap tascam which uses high bias cassette tapes, whatever you record is going to sound worse for being on that inexpensive medium. when you dub that tape which is laced with impurities, to the computer, you'll hear all the pops and noises that you might not have heard on the tascam. i might not sound clear still thought. sorry about that.

Suggestion; great software to record from analog to digital and convert it to all different types; cool edit.
Just download a demo from www.syntrillium.com and a crack from www.astalavista.com and you've got the whole version, with all the cleaning-up stuff and so on. It's great! (and frrrree)(yeah I'm dutch...)
