Mixing Down

To record I am using an Akai 4400, sound-on-sound sound with sound open-reel deck. I am using a mic'd Yamaha keyboard to lay down my different voices, i.e. piano, drums, strings etc. I am going through a stereo DJ mixer (Gemini MX-520) with a build in 14-band EQ and al of this is powered with my RCA A/V receiver. My cassette is a Sansui dual stereo deck. How do I get a quality, unmuddled mix down? Is my recording equipment and configuration all wrong?

First things first... Why are you miking a keyboard?... Is it one of them ones with the speakers?....

You should be going out from the output in the back... and Directly into your Mixer...

Other than that, it;s a set up that Im not familiar with, so I will have to pass at any advice on configuration...

You can make some ok demos with that setup but dont expect clear and punchy recordings.

If I'm not mistaken doesnt a Sound on Sound deck just keep layering the sounds on to the same 2 tracks? You wont really be able to mix anything.

The DJ mixer may be okay but they usually are pretty noisy compared to even cheap recording mixers. The preamps on it are not meant for recording either, just live speech.
