mixing down on computer

This may sound stupid but I am new at digital recording. How do I go about doing things during mixdown like mid-song panning and stuff like that. I use various programs like vegas and when it mixes down it simply mixes all the files together. Do I need to go in before mixdown and digitally pan the specific parts or what? Any help would be nice.
 
Vegas has pan (and volume) envelopes which are pretty cool. You would have to apply this to whatever tracks/wav's, and at whatever moment in the song - before you mix it down.
 
Thanks man. That is what I though I was gonna have to do. It is a little more complex than physically turning the pan pots on an analog machine but I will still do it. Later
