Hello, I am a music technology student and I am doing an assignment on mixing desks. I am a bit confused about certain things and I would like to ask a few questions, I hope you can help.

1. If a mixing desk is an 8-into-2, what does this mean?

2. What is Matrix routing?

3. Does anyone know any good websites or books to refer to on mixing desks? It doesn't matter if they're simple or very technical websites, anything would be of great help to me... thank you!

Eight into to two referes to eight input channels that sum to two. USUALLY if you hear a mixer refered to as something like 8-2 or 16-4-2 or 16-8-2 it translates to 8-2=8 inputs summing to 2 (stereo) or 16-4-2= 16 inputs that can be assigned to 8 sub groups which can end up in 2 (just about always stereo), etc.

A matrix output is an output (or multiple outputs) where you can set up a mix that is different from the main mix. There is usually a matrix section on the front of the console, where you can select what goes to your alternate mix. Matrices are often routed to broadcast feeds, or satellite speakers, or recording devices. The inputs to the matrix are often limited in number and features. A matrix section consisting of the subgroups and aux sends with no eq would be an example. Very useful, but requires a little thinking to get the most out of them.

Thank you very much! These have been very useful to me.
