Mixing and mastering competition ?

That is a very cool idea...... now if we can get the good folk at Cakewalk involved and maybe offer up a free XXXXXXX for the winner, (not a f**king T-Shirt.....), you will get lots of interest.

Who judges?

Ciao,

Q.

Well..... gotta clear a few things up first.
How big of files will we be working with.

If someone hands in some 65 track file, then it would probably hard to find space.

I got some space we could use, but not much at all... 50 megs.

I wouldn't think we would need more than that if we limit the compitition to a maximum of 2-4 tracks. Then the "mixers" would work off from that, making as many tracks as they desire with only the given material.

Mix down to mp3's, and I think we might be able to do something.

Great,

I did not mean to take this seriously to "judgement" things but it can be a great challenge. I can get in touch with Cakewalk and talk about the project. Maybe they could sponser and / or act as judge. I don't know.

The problem is, they could (and probably) restrict us to use exclusively their softwares or 3rd party plug-in they "approved" for mastering.

Waiting for your input.

Take you very much for your space offer. i'm looking for some too.

We can decide, all of us or maybe by a poll, the limit number of tracks and which instruments can be provided. Each track can be uploaded to your space as mp3 to limit space. Mp3 because we don't need so high quality tracks, we just need to compare final mix and mastering results.

So I thought about it...

  1. The song is ~3-4 minutes length.
  2. Tracks would be all audio (mp3) Tracks devided into :
Drums : 5 Tracks (Kick, Snare, Hihat, Toms, Overhead)
    Bass : 1 track.
Guitar : 2 tracks (Wheter clean & driven, or Rhytm and solo)
Keyboard : 2 tracks (select two: Piano, organ, brass, synth and/or strings).
Vocals : 2 tracks (Who sings )

So total is ~ 12 tracks.
  3. Mixes to 16 bit 44KHz Mp3.
  4. Plugins can be whatever you have.
  5. External editor are not allowed.
    [/list=1]

...hmmm  what do you think, guys ?

I was thinking more like one track per instrument, to start.
But during editing and mixing, you cane dupe as many as you like.

I.E. Only one guitar track for rythem, but while making my compilation, I would probably dupe it a couple of times for just for thickness.

This would force the person to be more creative, since he/she has fewer raw material to work with.

just an Idea =)

  1. Great that is close of what i had in mind !!!

12 mp3 tracks is good, i guess space of 50 mb will be fine. AS soon as the competition is closed we can remove these tracks to allow participant to upload their final works to be "Judge"

Also we have to define what style, mood of song we want to work. We have to do songwriting works to do or take an existing famous song to do our own adaptation... any idea ?

Things going fine with all your input.

For god sakes!

I REALLY need to proof read my posts before I reply. =)

Oh, and another thing.

Will there be ONE song with multiple tracks to master?

Or with there be multiple songs with multiple tracks?

The later would require quite a bit of space.

Furthermore, I would like to add that I don't feel comfortable giving out my login and pass for my web space, If I could download them from some common area, I could make a small web page for it, and post them that way.

Or get the tracks via e'mail might work for some of it.

I wouldn't expect a whole lot from me for a cool web page.... very novice here =)

Just ONE song, multiple tracks, I found Jaymz Argo scheme very interesting.

For the space, maybe i could register a free storage space at 50 mb like fileanywhere.com only for this purpose.

Let's all of us think about this one more day.

I don't know if this has been done in the past but creating a song with people we don't know much in different country would be funny and creative.

What i suggest is :

ONE :

To start, someone has to make a draft of a song, just a single track of chords (guitar or else) and participating writers (bass, drums, keyboards, etc can add their parts based on the draft like Jaymz scheme suggestion.

Participating writers must be limited 5 to 6 person to avoid endless composition.

As soon as all the tracks are recorded by these different people, they will be placed on the storage space to allow unlimited participating "masterer" to play with the mixing and mastering part (which is the core of the competition)

OR

TWO:

Someone (just one person) can provide all the tracks of his own song composition which will be placed on storage space to allow unlimited participating mix and master this song. This way can be less complicated because only one person is involved in writing all the parts.

Or any other ideas are welcome

If we go for option 1, we need a guitarist or two, bassist, drummer, keyboarist, vocalist, etc.

Some instruments could be MIDI converted to WAVE with high quality sample. (Jaymz, what do you think ? is midi to wav acceptable ?)

Maybe all of this look heavy to handle, but if you get the idea this could be easy.

By the way i'm a guitarist and midi programmer.
(Blues, folk, Rock, pop, celtic, jazz are my bag)

Personally.... I like option two. That way I can drag out the competition and have my bands first album mastered for free by everyone else. hahah
Just kidding.

I dunno, option one sounds rather interesting.
Could get rather complex, but fun none the less. =)

I prefer option 1. That way it truly IS transatlantic jamming (and mixing)...

I can play guitar on option 1! :)

I don't see my self making the option 2...

Ok! All write what they can provide, and then we can settle who plays what!

Moskus: Electric Guitar, bass, (and a little midi-drums and pads), Hammond B3
Musart: Guitar (ac & el.), bass, drums

Add yourself to the list, copy and paste it into your message! :)

Sure... why not ? beside, I think it's easier than to record the whole set of real drums. But I think we should use "general" kit (NOT confused with GM Kit !!!). say like GoldDrums, DR 008, BlueJay kit, etc... It's perfect for all kind of music.

;)
