Hey everyone. Aside from recording a few little songs here and there for myself I didn't know much about mixing until I took on this project producing a local rock solo artist's first album.

I want to make sure everything is up to par (or as close to par as it will get with my experience)

I REALLY need some good criticism. I'll be sending it off for mastering pretty soon, and I was able to get them an incredibile deal at a great mastering house in LA but I don't have the ability to get feedback from them on my mixes.

I don't have a place to put the whole song, so it's just a clip, but PLEASE....anyone. It's a 1meg file. It sounds a bit bass heavy to me (it's still a rough mix) but once again ANY help is VERY appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Firts of all, the song is not bass heavy at all.
Second, listen carefully to the balance of the guitars. At the start of the song for instance, the rythm guit comes sharply from one side, the more melodic one is burried on the other side. The picture changes later on, but I still feel there is a lack of balance overall.

Perhaps don't have them panned so extremely, perhaps differentiate them from each other with sound - some EQ, some more space on the lead.

The tamborine - It really sticks its head in there. If you use it, use it carefully, barely there. Something does not need to be prominent to do its job.

All in all, it could be better, but not bad at all if its your first go at it. Good material, keep working at it.

Quick question -- wat mastering house and how much?

Thanks so much for the response. I was hoping you would listen to it :)

I kinda thought I was panning the guitars to far. I haven't automated the guitar levels yet, so I'll remember to mix them according to their parts. I'll try some diff eqs on them too. There was a "difference of opinion" on how loud the tamborine should be. I think it will come down a bit in the final mix.

The mastering house is dna mastering. For 12 songs they're doing it for $500. I saw your post yesterday about the deal you were offering, but the dates about posts re: actual mastering (and not everything else) went back to early july, so I figured it wasn't valid anymore. Is it?

Have you ever heard of dna? It hasn't existed more than a few years, but I know one of the guys from a mastering place he worked for before dna and he's been doing it for a pretty long time.

One more question...Do the drums sound REALLY fake? They are, but I tried as hard as I could to make them real.

Nothing wrong with the drumsound, all depends on taste.
I think DNA was founded in 99. I can't say I've heard anything about their work, either good or bad. Email me and I'll give you a price as well.

Not too bad. Unfortunately, I was listening on my lowly computer speakers. They tend to enhance the highest highs and the lowest lows, but not much in the middle. (2 small speakers and a subwoofer from Midiland).

The tambourines did sound loud. Vocals sounded great. The guitar on the left...on mine anyway...was much louder than the one on the right. Have you tried listening to it in mono?

As for the bass...as a bassist myself...I wanted more...but that could be the lack of clarity of my speakers. I didn't listen in the studio. What are you mixing through? Do you have true Studio Monitors, or are you using the PA..or perhaps a stereo? That's how I've been doing it. It takes forever to get a good mix this way, because I'm constantly compensating for what the stereo and PA enhance or color. It'll sound great in the studio, but it'll sound terrible (usually boomy) in a stereo system or in the car. I'm awaiting some studio monitors now to help my mixes. I ordered some Roland DS-90a's last weekend from Musicians Friend.

At this late hour...Hmm...those drums were fake?! ;')

I was really happy with the vocals as well. It's a rode ntv and a joe meek vc6q....Seemed to work well with his voice. The bassist has been playing only a few months, so thats part of the reason it's a bit low. They also wanted the kick REALLY loud, so I tried my best to make room for that and the bass.

I'm mixing with event 20/20's and a alesis ra 100 power amp.

Thanks for your response!
