I'm working with a local hardcore techno group called Ferrati (www.mp3.com/ferrati) on their first LP. I've been doing recording and live sound reinforcment for a few years now and I've engineered a few albums for indie jobbers on shitty equipment (an eight channel radio shack mixer to a Hi-Fi VCR, in a guy's basement was the best recording equipment I ever used to record), so kinda know what I'm doing.
Now, we recorded this album using a sampling programming (for drums), and a handful of analog synth emulations controlled with a Casio keyboard from where else, Radio Shack.
Now, I'm know for my technique of layering several different drum machines, playing the same beat to get a big fat sound. However, I put a TR-909 bass higher up in the mix to get a killer bass sound.
Team that up with a real to life emulation of a moog, and DSP of several upright basses, you got one thick sound.
This album was done all on two computer speakers.
Well, I tried the mixdown (done on headphones, I like "headphone album") CD on my stereo. HOLY SHIT HUGE BASS!!!. I tried it on my car sound system BIGGER BASS!!!. My buddies system BIGGER BASS THAN MY SYSTEM!!.
The rule is, don't mix with computer speakers.
