Mixers and Control Surfaces

In my studio I want to be able to record a number of sources (drums, guitar, keyboard, MV, ect) and easily control the volume on the way in. Ergo I would need a mixer for doing this. However I also want to be able to have a control surface because all the sources are going into a computer, probably using protools. Finally, ideally I would like to have 24 faders because it really is easier. I was thinking about maybe getting two units - say a Mackie 24 8 or similar and then maybe the mixed logic M24 which would both give me 24 faders. A cheaper solution also might be to get the Yamaha 03D but then I would give up some faders. And then I was thinking perhaps I should just wait until I can afford the 3500+ for a used Mackie D8B (of course then why not wait for a Control 24...). Any advice?
Also does anybody know if you can link up a Digimax LT to a protools 001 box? Does the adat light pipe work for that?

How about this which is what I'm buying -

Used Tascam Dm-24 with Firecard about $1400.00 - 24 channels of I/O and 60 channels of mixing, DAW controls

or this which is where I'm heading

Tascam US2400 $1599.00 (24 channel control surface)
Presonus Firepod $599.99 (10 channel I/O)
or
Tascam FW1804 $599.99 (18 Ins and 10 Outs)

I hadn't seen the Tascam 24, but it appears to be basically the same thing as the Yamaha 03D which is only about $900 used and is already DAW compatible.
I thought about the US2400 but I havent seen great reviews and heard it was kinda chintzy.
Right now I'm leaning towards saving for the Mackie D8B.

I have exactly what you mention here, Tascam DM24 with the Firewire card. Mine also has an additional ADAT card which gives me 32 total digital channels.

FWIW, I think the DM24 is a much nicer board than that Yammy.
YMMV.

Personally, I think the yamaha sounds better than the Tascam, but they are certainly pretty similar. My biggest gripe with the Tascam is the build quality. There have been many issues with the faders in specific. Bottom line, is that would not necessarily stop me from purchasing it, but it would deter me from buying a used one.

Why not buy a PM1000 which is chocked full of extremely good mic preamps for $500, and the buy a separate control surface? That way you spend your money on good mic preamps, and then buy a control surface without preamps?
