mixer?

could someone please suggest an affordable mixer that i could purchase. i was thinking maybe the mackie 1202 or something comparable. im really not needing vocals, just to run my mpc, trinity rack, planet phatt & jv2080 sound module. any help would be greatly appreciated.

A 1202 would give you four stereo line level channels which should cover your needs plus four pretty decent mic pre's. The four channels with the preamps will also accept line level inputs as well so that could be two more stereo pairs. Nice little unit. I have one laying around the house somewhere.

Many people would dissagree, but I would highly recommend a Behringer 1604. It is very similar to the Mackie 1202 in design and functions (but has faders instead of knobs, which is always a benfit). People like to rant about the Behringer mixers being lousy in quality control, but I have worked with quite a few and hadn't seen a single problem yet (knock on wood). Many people don't like the mic pre-amps on them. I think they're totally usable on a home studio, and if you will only use the mixer for electronic instruments, then I don't really see what have you got to lose. If you decide to get one, check every input and output before you take it home, make sure that there isn't track bleeding between the submixes, and you're good to go.
It's half the price of the Mackie. I used both, and IMHO, for a home studio, there is no need to spend this much more for the Mackie. You can always add an outboard pre-amp if you really need one.

I have a VERY low opinion of Behringer mixers. Their compressors were functional and I own one but as a company, it's getting hard to ignore the way they do bussiness. They do no research and development on any of the products they make, they just steal designs and reverse engineer everything.
 
This may all be true, but with the combination of the horrific taxes they have here (from some odd reason) on pro-audio gear, and my day-jobs (which were during the last two years: enlisted army sergeant, camp councelor, assitant recording engineer, starving student. all pay close to nothing), I don't think I can really take into consideration the way Behringer do their business, if I want to keep my hobby. ;)
The price I payed for my Behringer 1604 is close to 300$, after I trade in my Behringer 602. You can imagine what a Mackie would have cost me...

Get the 1402 VLZ or later. You will appreciate the sliders and you can use the inserts as sends. Stay away from that Behringer shit. Peter
 
buying a mixer

I have about 700 bucks to buy a mixer for my studio. I am using a digi 001 w/ pro tools LE. i want at lease 16 channels so i can record 16 tracks at once, but 24 would be nice so i can use my aux and extra fader's for out board fx's. Im not shure what I can get in this price range. IF you know of any half decent clean board for around 700 buck or a little more, let me know. If you know any place in MD, PA, WV or VA that has a good used store in which i can purchase a used mixer please pass it along to me. ( THis includes internet sites too!)... Thanks your help is appreciated.
