I am runing a Behringer mixer to a emu 0404 soundcard. I have two questions.

1- which outputs should i run to the card. the mixer has control room out, ALT 3-4 out and balanced XLR main outs. In addition it has the L-R AUX sends.

2- I am going to run back to the tape input for monitoring. (assuming this is the best way not to re-record the monitored signal.) The E-MU has 1/4 outputs. The mixer has RCA inputs on the tape. Should i use 1/4 cable and adapt one end to RCA? or use RCA cable and adapt one end to 1/4 inch.? does it matter?

ALSO if you know a better way to set this up other than this approach, feel free to let me know. I am fairly new to all of this. I just switched from a tascam us-122 because i felt that it was very limited.

I'd run the main balanced outs from the mixer to the inputs of the soundcard, via XLR -TRS(not TS)I'm assuming the soundcards inputs are balanced. Then the outputs from the card to that last stereo channels and mute it(assuming that muting sends the signal to the ALT 3-4), then have your monitors connected to the ALT 3-4 outputs. You have many many options to choose from though.

I will have to try that out. That sounds like a pretty good set up. muting that channel will allow it to play back through the 3-4 outputs but since it is muted on the board it will not record into the main mix again correct??
ALSO, if i wanted to attach a headphone amp for someone to listen to while recording vocals for instance , would i run that from the control room outs? or just use the headphone jack on the mixer board? both are controlled with the same volume.

Thanks so much for your help.

I use the insert I/O on channels 1 and 2 on my board to send the signal to the card. Then all 8 from the card back into the board. Obviously I don't playback on 1 and 2 while recording. Then from board to Microverb to EQ to BBE to CDR to monitors. /shrug, works for me.

my mixer does not have individual i/o on each channel. It only has the outputs that are stated above. Also, my soundcard only has 1/4 l-r in and 1/4 l-r out.

Pandamonk's suggestion is sound.

I would do the same at the start (mixer mains out into soundcard), but then take soundcard output and drop it into the tape input (as you suggested). This means finding a set of 1/4 to RCA leads. You can find these fairly readily, and it's worth getting a cable configured this way rather than using adapters (no matter which end), because they can get loose over time.

I would hook up the monitoring system to the control room out, and on the mixer, switch the control room output to the tape setting. Monitor level is controlled by the control room knob. This way you free up all your mixer channels for recording purposes, and in your monitors your are listening to everything after it has been through the PC.

great..that sounds like what i had in mind to begin with, just didnt know if it would all work other than in theory. needed some people with experience to help me decide. one more question.....i cannot find anywhere if my soundcards inputs are balanced or unbalanced. My main outs on the mixer are balanced. do they have to match? what is the benefits of them matching or not? thanks a bunch guys.
