hello I am new to this forum, and would like you guys to solve all my problems, hahaha
just joking, any kind of advice would suffice

i am in doubt about how to next upgrade my setup. i am a solo artist and i need to be able to record to my computer in a more professional way than recording directly to the built in mic in my powerbook, as i've been doing for the past years.

based on that the obvious choice is some kind of USB interface so i can hook up my dynamic mic and record all the stuff that i want (one track at a time), but here's the problem: i also want to play live.

i was thinking then of buying a small mixer, which would help me live (i could plug in my guitar, sp 404, and mic to the same amp etc etc) and would be a sufficient enough tool for recording, even enabling me to record more than one track at a time (since Im also thinking of upgrading my solo project to a full band)...

am i thinking straight? is the mixer the best option or do i not know exactly what works best with what (which i fear i don't)?

sorry for such a long post, but this dilemma is burning me up from the insides

thank you all!!

There are numerous USB mixers.
They work as live mixers but also will dump the stereo bus directly to a computer via USB.

I don't know what they would run where you live.
There are numerous ones made by Alesis, Mackie and others. If you need to be able to send 8 tracks or more of audio directly in and out of your computer, they even make a slightly more expensive version that is a Firewire mixer. USB is pretty well limited to only 2 tracks at a time in and out, firewire can get up 16 to 24 from I understand.
I might be wrong on that.

well im guessing firewire costs more

i dont really have that kind of money

is the behringer xenyx series any good? i mean, it's usb and affordable

if your going to get a berry, i would reccomend the alesis multimix8 usb. i only say this because i have it and it is worth the $150.

I wouldn't recomend a mixer unless you're prepared to spend a little bit. I do live performances all the time just with my laptop and an interface. Especially if you want to record track at a time... there's really no point in adding that bit of noise. I'd just go with a nice interface...as for the money you're more likely to find better quality than if you are even wanting to go the usb mixer route.
