I want to do some recording, mostly vocal mixes into existing digital music, but some analog music, some keyboard, etc. Hardly professional, but I don't want it to sound like crap either.

I have lots of analog equipment from my years of DJing. Mostly XLR stuff. Favorite mics, etc. Again, not professional, but don't want to go crazy with new stuff when I'm comfortable with what I have.

I want to be able to have more than one mic, plus the XLR outs from my Mackie mixer. Perhaps even a midi keyboard.

I read the stickies (very helpful, btw) and from them I've come up with the Tascam US-600. Does this sound like I'm on the right track? Is there something better out there?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
The us600 has 6 inputs but two are spdif, so really you're working with 4.
That means mackie mixer + two mics max.

Be sure to get XLR-TRS cables for your mixer, so you aren't feeding it into a pair of mic preamps.

See, just what I needed, some guidance. Thanks! That may be ok, but I'll probably bump up to the 800.

Thanks also for pointing out the mic preamp thing. So, the TRS plug bypasses the mic preamp?

(edit - Never mind - I read the manual and I answered my own question).

...and it looks like the US-800 is discontinued. The 600 may be as well, but it's still available.

I've run into some Behringer hate over the years - they have some USB mixers, without MIDI. Any thoughts on something like the QX1202USB? (sorry - newbies can't post links)

I can't speak for that exact model, but any USB behringer mixers that I've seen sum all the inputs to stereo over USB, meaning that you can't record more than two discreet channels at once.

Here are Tascam's current interfaces.

Depends on the Mackie in question. Most have TRS main outs. The 1202 VLZ and 1402 VLZ have XLR main outputs that are switchable to mic level.

That's exactly what they appear to do. Bummer.

I've been using that, but the US-800 seems to have been discontinued and isn't available. Over here, anyway. The 600 will do. Thanks again for your help.
