I know this is a microphone forum but it kind of applies i think.

I have access to a mid-90s Mackie 1604 VLZ. Its not a -Pro or the latest -VLZ3 its the first version from the 90s. Im getting it for $495 in decent condition.

For under $1000 is this a good way to go? I will be using my own nice mic pres for almost everything but I am afraid that the fact that it is an older model and not the newest versions will stop me from getting the most fidelity in my mixdowns. Or do i neeed not worry because I am bypassing the internal pres?

Any other sub $1000 mixers you recomend? How do u guys feel about the Allen Heath Mixwizard?

thanks.

I don't think I would pick the Mackie for mixdowns. The EQ section is terrible. The A&H Mixwiz has much better EQ; it doesn't have the subgroups of the Mackie (at least the 16 channel version doesn't), but I don't think you would be concerned with that for a DAW mixdown.

On the other hand, I don't think you'll get a used 16 channel MixWiz for $500, so . . .

FYI, I would sell you my original 1604 mixer complete with the OTTO-1604 MIDI VCA unit for way less than $450 and it would mixdown just as well and give you the MIDI controlled mixdown option.

Cheers,

Otto
