i need some inexpenxive equipment and i want to know from the knowledge out there if i get a great soundcard with usb , do i still need to buy a mixer or pre amp, keep in mind i rap so i need no live instrument input i just need good sound , my beats are all on disc and i just need to put them in and voice over and its just me and one other member just for demo....Honestly what do i need ??????

good sound... dont belive there are good soundcards using USB.

for a mic, a cheap all round mic you can get the shure SM 57. pre amp, you have mindprind or focusrite. a cheat and nice mixer, soundcraft spirit M series.

for good soundcards you have RME. :-)

I disagree. There are fine USB soundcards on the market. The only real disadvantage is the limited amount of simultaneous i/o but but when it's just one channel of voice in, USB can be a great solution. I'm sure that for instance an M-audio USB device delivers the same quality as their PCI devices.

There are USB soundcards with built in preamps and more (like Tascam US-428) but I think most of them just have ins at line level.
