I have Cubase 1.0.7 (It's what came with the firepod I bought). I haven't had any problems learning/using it. But I have found that when I export a mixdown and then play the resulting file (in itunes or windows media player) that the sound quality is noticably less than what I was hearing in cubase. What could be the problem? the old version of cubase?

Generally that sort of stuff ends up pilot error somewere, or other variables; is playback on/through the same system? Full 16bit wav vs wav..?

I always bounce the mixes down to a new tracks in the project. Make a clean non effected route (like your main mix but no alterations) to play those back on. Should then sound identical to live play of the mix.
Export that.
Plus you get a saved aglined in the proj copy for trouble shooting etc.

Are you sure it's the QUALITY that is less, and not just the overall volume? The way human hearing works, louder 'sounds better'.
